TPF’s hottie of the week: Katy Perry
Since when are cream spurting cupcake boobs not good for kids? Katy shot a segment for the show “Sesame Street” which was supposed to air on New Year‘s Eve, in which she sings a cleaned-up version of her song, “Hot N Cold” with Elmo. The producers canceled the spot because some parents found that her boobs were too front and centered, but we want Katy Perry to know that it’s O.K. with us and to feel free to show your boobs whenever she pleases.
Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was born October 25th, 1984 and is better known by her stage name Katy Perry. She was born in Santa Barbara, California, and raised by Christian pastor parents while listening to only gospel music as a kid.
As Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled gospel album in 2001, which due to the closing of her record label, was deemed unsuccessful.
Katy changed it up a tad once the gospel thing didn’t work out, considering her first hit was something like… I kissed a girl and I liked it.
Sex sells and Katy Perry is a perfect example of that.
Perry admits that her perspective in music was “a bit enclosed and very strict”, and everything she did was church-related. Her second album, One of the Boys, is described as “secular” and “rock,” and reflects a departure from her religious musical roots.
Katy’s mother reportedly told British tabloid Daily Mail that she dislikes her daughter’s music, calling it “shameful and disgusting” which is not surprising considering it coming from a church woman. In today’s society sometimes an artist is forced to be something that she/he is not because it’s what sells and pays the bills, it could be argued Katy Perry is one of those artists.
Her songs “Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” have received negative reactions from both religious and gay sectors. The songs have been respectively labeled as being homophobic and promoting homosexuality, as well as “lez ploitational” MTV mentioned criticism suggesting that Perry is using “bi-curiosity” as a way to sell records. Perry responded to the controversy surrounding “Ur So Gay”: “It’s not a negative connotation. It’s not, ‘you’re so gay,’ like, ‘you’re so lame,’ but the fact of the matter is that this boy should’ve been gay. I totally understand how it could be misconstrued or whatever … It wasn’t stereotyping anyone in particular, I was talking about ex-boyfriends.
Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs and it has worked.
Perry looks like a pop star, but isn’t as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, “She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess.
“What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist’s growth, and I think that she’s challenging. I think she’s brash and bold.”
