In fact $8,200 worth of penalties, more than twice the league average of 35.

According to the SFGate.com, It doesn’t really fit in a jar. “It’s in a Brinks truck,” defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan, who brings out the money as a visual reminder at meetings and locks it up at night.

“Charity will love us at the end of the year,” Bresnahan said.

The 2011 squad established new NFL marks for penalties and penalty yardage, finishing with 163 for 1,358 yards and breaking the standards established by the 1998 Chiefs, who were flagged 158 times for 1,304 yards.

“We have overcome it in certain instances but, then for us, in certain drives, like the Detroit game, we have those (penalties) that keep drives alive that make a difference in the game,” Bresnahan said. “So, we got to eliminate it. Our guys are taking a real concern to it out here in practice. And (we have) officials here every day (at practice). It’s not like they’re just standing around. They’re throwing it when they see it. So, we’re making a concerted effort to improve in every area. The ones that really get you are the no-brainers. The offsides, the pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball and all phases of the game.”

Kelly was asked why not make the fines hurt a tad bit more, maybe $1,000 a pop.

“If you up it to $1,000, some guys will get mad about paying it,” he said. “You just have to lock in a little more, man. I mean, when it comes back to bite us in a really big moment, I guess that’s when everybody is going to realize that we need to focus in on it a little bit more.”

Oakland has committed at least 100 penalties for 12 straight seasons and have ranked in the top five in total penalties in the NFL for five straight seasons.

    Make it $1,000 a penalty then, because if they don’t mind paying $100 they don’t mind getting the penalty. Make it hurt them as much as they hurt the team. $100 per penalty for millionaires is a joke.
