Victor Cruz offer is an insult
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, who is arguably the most popular player on the team is getting low-balled with a 7 million dollar a year deal that is just ludicrous. It’s ludicrous, because Danny Amendola and Wes Welker didn’t set the market for slot receivers. Amendola was underpaid, because he decided to play for the New England Patriots who always underpay players. And Wes Welker was just trying to take as much money as he could, because he’s nearing his mid-thirties. Cruz on the other hand has been the most productive wide receiver on the Giants for the past two seasons.
Cruz has led the Giants in yards for two straight seasons; he’s amassed over 2,500 yards and 19 touchdowns in two seasons. He’s also Eli Manning’s top target, which means he’s getting open more than Hakeem Nicks. So why would the Giants offer Cruz a contract extension that is an embarrassment to his skill set? I know about salary cap issues, etc. but Cruz deserves to get paid. He was your catalyst to a Super Bowl run.
This whole slot receiver’s aren’t valuable positions don’t live in the modern-day NFL. Slot receivers are becoming more and more a position that teams have to have in order to have an edge. And Cruz is the best slot receiver out of the all. Better than Welker, better than Amendola, because he isn’t just a slot receiver. He has the speed to be a downfield threat, and that’s fact that is getting missed in the talks now.
Cruz isn’t just one of the best slot receivers. He’s one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. He’s the best wide receiver on the Giants. It’s nice to have Nicks, but Cruz is your star receiver. He deserves to be compensated for what he is accomplishing on the Giants now, but this 7 million dollar a year offer is a slap in the face to what his potential that has yet to be seen is worth.
