The NFL’s beast of the week: Fins Cameron Wake
Footsteps…you hear that? It’s the NFL’s beast of the week Miami Dolphins Cameron Wake! Hide your kids, hide your wife and get ready to close your eyes when they hit opposing quarterbacks. This is a countdown of the top 5 pass rushers in the NFL for week 4. This week, we’re recognizing Miami Dolphins Cameron Wake, Minnesota Vikings Everson Griffen, Houston Texans J.J. Watt, Cincinnati Bengals Geno Atkins and Carolina Panthers Charles Johnson.
5. Minnesota Vikings Everson Griffen
Everybody knows about defensive end Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings, but people are going to have to get to know Everson Griffen soon. The fourth round pick of the Vikings in the 2010 draft is finally finding his place at defensive end from the linebacker position he played last season and it shows with 3 sacks so far this season. Griffen recorded 2 sacks and 3 QB hits in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. If Griffen can keep plugging away, he can be the compliment to Jared Allen the Vikings have been longing for since Ray Edwards.
4. Cincinnati Bengals Geno Atkins
Cincinnati Bengals Geno Atkins doesn’t get enough credit as being one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. In four weeks he has recorded 5 sacks and had 2 sacks against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4 with 3 QB hits as well. Atkins was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and if he keeps this production up, he will be there again in 2012. Atkins is well on his way to possibly being the Beast of the Year.
3. Houston Texans J.J. Watt
Houston Texans J.J. Watt is the best 3-4 defensive tackle in the NFL bar none in 2012. Watt is also arguably the best defensive lineman in the NFL. Watt leads the league in sacks with 7.5 as of Week 4 and had 2 sacks against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4 with 2 QB hits as well. Watt isn’t running out of batteries anytime soon and is well on his way to being Beast of Year as well with his production thus far.
2. Carolina Panthers Charles Johnson
I have been a little tough on the Panthers lately and is deserved because of being at the bottom of the league in sacks, but Charles Johnson seemed to have taken my advice. Johnson who didn’t record a sack in all 3 of the first 3 games of the season exploded with 3.5 sacks and 5 QB hits on the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4. I’m sorry Johnson, you proved me wrong this week, but you have 12 more games left to make this Week 4 sack explosion not be a fluke.
1. Miami Dolphins Cameron Wake
Miami Dolphins Cameron Wake is another defensive player who was being criticized for not showing up on Sundays with many sacks. However Wake in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals had 4.5 sacks and 5 QB hits. Wake signed a four year extension with the Dolphins worth 49 million dollars with 20 million guaranteed. So it was kind of scary for him to be sack less for 3 weeks, but at least he put on quite a performance in Week 4. Wake has the potential to earn that money in 2012, but only if he stays consistent. However 4.5 sacks and 5 QB hits makes Cameron Wake the beast of the week for Week 4.
