Redskins move forward without DeAngelo Hall
The first day of the 2013 NFL Free Agency period has arrived and the Redskins started by releasing cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Hall was entering his sixth season with the Redskins and being owed $8 million for 2013, Dan Snyder, Mike Shannahan, and Bruce Allen were $3 million over the cap. In the end, the front office decided to release Hall to make space. Santana Moss has restructured his contract and Adam Carriker has also said he will do the same. The team also signed TE Logan Paulsen and OL Kory Lichtensteiger to multi-year deals.
With Hall now out of the Redskins picture, the Redskins will have to have find a replacement at CB. Josh Wilson is still with the team and it is for certain that 2013 will be one where the Redskins will expect better play if he wants to remain with the team. Richard Crawford was a 2012 draft pick of the Redskins that saw some playing time at corner and returning kicks and as far as current roster members would be the one who has the leg up as far as taking over for Hall. The word though is that the Redskins and General Manager Bruce Allen are focusing their attention on New England Patriots CB Aqib Talib. Bruce Allen was the longtime GM of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it was Allen that drafted Talib with the 20th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Current Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris had the same posistion with the Bucs in 2008 and from 2009-2011 was the head coach of the Bucaneers so Allen and Morris are very familiar with Talib. The word is that it is pretty much certain that the Patriots will be parting ways with Talib and the Redskins front office have made it clear that they would like to accquire the services of Talib.
Free agency is certainly going to be a tough one for the Redskins as they have to deal with a $18 million dollar salary cap hit for 2013 as part of the ruling of infractions from the 2010 non-cap year. Several more players are going to have to restructure their contracts if the team is looking to delve deep in the free agency market. If the Redskins are going to be able to get Talib, it will certainly be a nice replacement for Hall. It is certainly safe to say that if Talib goes to the Redskins that Dan Snyder and Company will probably not go for anymore top name free agents. The 2013 NFL Draft is not that far away and one thing that is for certain is the 2013 Draft is full of some very good defensive back talent and they all could fit very well into the Redskins’ and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett’s scheme. It will certainly be interesting to see what route that the Redskins take.
The bottom line is that the Washington Redskins are going to be moving on into 2013 and beyond without the services of DeAngelo Hall. Hall was regarded as one of the fastest and most athletic players on the Redskins roster over the last five seasons but his hefty salary was going to be one that the ‘Skins were not going to be able to deal with. Even if the Redskins are not able to get Aqib Talib in free agency, the 2013 Draft will give the Redskins plenty of options to fill that roster spot of Hall’s and start the task of fashioning that player in becoming an All-Pro just like DeAngelo Hall was.
