Potential 2013 Washington Redskins roster changes
The 2012 season is over for the Washington Redskins, and now we look onto the potential 2013 Washington Redskins roster changes. Over 21 Redskins could potentially change hands this offseason. The number 1 Redskin that enters free agency in 2013 is Fred Davis. Davis suffered an Achilles tendon tear, and was placed on I.R. in the first half of 2012, and now whether he’s still a viable option is up in the air. Can he come back from the injury is the only concern, but the Redskins will need to make a decision fast. Before other teams decide to take a chance on a very talented tight end with nothing, but an injury concern.
The current starting tight end on the roster Logan Paulsen is a restricted free agent in 2013, but he doesn’t have the same potential as Davis. I don’t see many teams interested in giving compensation to the Redskins for Paulsen. On the offensive line, Kory Lichtensteiger becomes an unrestricted free agent and Tyler Polumbus. There shouldn’t be any fear, because of Jammal Brown coming back in 2013 at the right tackle spot, but Kory Lichtensteiger should get a new contract. The offensive line of the Redskins was outstanding in 2012, and keeping intact many of the major players is a must this offseason.
Rob Jackson becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2013, but Brian Orakpo will be back. The Redskins should have no worries with the linebackers in 2013. The secondary needs a lot of work from being 30th in the NFL in pass defense in 2012. Safety Madieu Williams is an unrestricted free agent in 2013. Bringing him back will take some time for the coaching staff to analyze him on tape, because of the performance of the secondary in 2012. He may not be back, but unfortunately the Redskins don’t have many options to upgrade the secondary without doing it in free agency.
The Redskins will not have a first round pick in the 2013 draft, and that is kind of an issue, because there are spots on this team that could seriously use an upgrade. That’s not to say that they will have a rough offseason, but they will need to be creative in the draft to get some more impact players on offense and defense. If they can get those kinds of players added, then the Redskins have a good shot at repeating the NFC East title, but I would caution on spending big bucks on free agents. I’m not going to say this team is only one player or two players away from being dominant, because that kind of thinking landed the Redskins in the bottom of the NFC East before. However the Redskins do need to get some fresh new pieces added to the mix to see an improvement on their 10-6 record in 2013.
