Chicago Bears, JaMarcus Russell make for good entertainment
Never let it be said that the status quo is good enough for new Head Coach Marc Trestman. Faced with QB’s Jay Cutler, veteran Josh McCown and second year man Matt Blanchard running plays all summer, the Bears have invited the one and only JaMarcus Russell to work out for the team on Friday June 7, ironically one day after D-Day. The report of these shenanigans comes from ESPN Chicago, although Russell’s agent has not confirmed the workout. Other teams, unnamed of course, are reportedly interested as well.
This is an interesting development. Russell is reportedly back at his draft weight of 265 pounds and would make a seriously entertaining addition to the dog days of Bears training camp. But before interested fans have him inked to a contract, remember the Carson Palmer experiment and how that went south (literally, to Arizona) and the Michael Vick comeback that may be nearing its end with 2012 statistically being the worst season he has ever endured.
Comebacks are for a select few; quite possibly not for Russell, and we will have to wait and see if the Bears brain trust sees enough to warrant taking such a huge chance on a person who could conceivably become Jay Cutler’s backup. But what the heck; go kick back for a while. The workout hasn’t even taken place yet.
Bet it’s going to be a long, but entertaining summer.
