Inconsistency killed the Cardinals
This Arizona Cardinals season has been marked with both ups and downs this year while they have dealt with their many problems. Coming into the year they were switching between two quarterbacks, and injuries have thus far been the deciding factor on who has gotten the snaps. The Cardinals have also had to deal with a very below average offensive line that has given up the most sacks in the NFL this year, and have been unable to open up running lanes for their backs. When the passing game flourishes in one game, it seems they cant get the running game going; or if they are able to finally get yards on the ground as they did vs. the Vikings and Bills the passing game lets them down.
It seems as if the real problem with the Arizona Cardinals this year is the lack of consistency on offense. The offensive line routinely is giving up sacks, yet the team was able to still win four games in a row. Despite routinely rushing for under 100 yards, the Cardinals still reeled off wins, it is becoming more and more obvious that the Cardinals have many holes to fill and that their defense has been the main reason for their success this season. In the game vs. the Bills the defense let up only 19 points and the offensive finally had a real running game with William Powell and Kevin Kolb rushing for a combined 136 yards; which is more than Kolb was able to pass for and was the reason the Cardinals only scored 16 points. Early in the year the team was consistently airing out the ball and winning, now that they have put more focus into the run game the past two weeks they have seen the real reason the NFL has become a passing league, passing is how team’s score.
If the Cardinals want to start winning again and make the playoffs a possibility they are going to need to be more consistent in the passing and running games. The game vs. the Vikings was a good example of how this team can win in the future, they had their first 100-yard rusher of the year, and had a decent passing game with John Skelton throwing for over 200 yards and a touchdown. Although they still lost the game, it was one of the better efforts by their offense this year and is something they can build on.
