2012 NFC East predictions: Are the Cowboys playoff bound?

Can the Dallas Cowboys make the playoffs in 2012? Historically the NFC East has been one of the toughest divisions in the NFL and that tendency should again hold true in the upcoming season.  Last season, the New York Giants won the NFC East with a 9-7 record on the last week of the regular season with a win over the Cowboys.  With the offseason upgrades of the Washington Redskins and the way the Philadelphia Eagles ended 2011, any of the four teams are capable of becoming division champs in 2012.  Here are the 2012 NFC East final standing predictions and team records.

Eli Manning

Eli Manning makes case for best Giants QB ever

When the New York Giants agreed to trade Philip Rivers  for Eli Manning during the 2004 draft, they probably had no idea they would be getting the best quarterback the team has ever had, arguably.

Somewhere, the San Diego Chargers are kicking themselves.

Giants only NFC East team in good position

A year ago, the New York Giants would have been thought of as the last team in the NFC East to be in the best position.  Now, 20 games and a Super Bowl ring later, New York is the team with the least questions surrounding them come draft day.  The Giants will have the 32nd and final pick in the first round of the NFL draft — a spot they will gladly take — as their counterparts within the division all seek answers.

Unsung heroes play vital role as Giants crowned champs

They were written off before the season ever started. After the New York Giants refused to make a move in the lockout-shortened off-season, no one gave them a chance.

Slot receiver Steve Smith signed with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, adding ammunition to the self-proclaimed ‘dream team’, while tight end Kevin Boss was inked to a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, leaving New York short of two big-time play makers from previous seasons.

As the preseason wore on, the bad news kept on coming.

The hard work and dedication that was put in throughout the season comes to a end and the celebration begins. Parades, confetti and relaxation can only last so long as now the challenge quickly arises of  the Giants quest to repeat as champions.

No one will say the Giants don’t have places on their roster to improve and now have free agency and the 2012 NFL draft to find answers to some of those upcoming holes.

The Giants have a glaring need at the tight end position and with names like Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski dominating the position the Giants may look for a dominating tight end who can have the kind of success those two have shown.

Dwayne Allen

The Penalty Flag’s Mike Presley believes the Giants will go offense in the first two rounds;

Round 1, Pick 32: Dwayne Allen TE Clemson: How can you improve upon a team who just won the Super Bowl? Give them more offensive help, Jake Ballard is ok but certainly can be upgraded. Giving Eli Manning another weapon to play with on offense would make their offense scarier.

Round 2, Pick 64: Kelechi Osemele G Iowa State: David Diehl is owed $8 Million over the next two seasons and will most likely be a cap causality this off-season. The Giants can add his replacement right here at the bottom of round two. They get two fabulous players at the bottom of the first two rounds and will be set for a repeat.

ESPN.com’s Mel Kiper also believes the Giants will select Allen;

Tight end became a need for New York when Travis Beckum and Jake Ballard both suffered torn ACLs during the team’s Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots. The injuries are likely to leave Bear Pascoe as New York’s lone healthy returning tight end when training camp arrives, which makes adding a tight end crucial — and Allen might be the best available in the draft.

Allen is viewed as someone who can bring a lot of versatility to an NFL offense, especially as a pass-catcher. A strong player with impressive if not elite athleticism, Allen is described by Kiper as the best tight end in this year’s draft. The National Football Post has Allen ranked as the No. 3 tight end and the No. 40 overall prospect, citing his talents as a natural pass-catcher but noting that his blocking needs improvement.

FantasyKnuckleHeads.com1st Round (1.32): Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

Aaron Ross is a free agent and Terrell Thomas is a free agent coming off an ACL injury. The team may decide to let one or both go, leaving some depth problems at corner back behind Corey Webster and Prince Amukamara. The secondary was a glaring hole at times this year.

Dennard is a well-rounded corner back who is athletic and aggressive, but he needs to improve on his tackling. He excels in man-to-man coverage and does a good job in moving receivers off the line. His reaction time while the ball is in the air needs to improve and he doesn’t have particularly good hands to secure the interception. He could fall all the way down to the Giants last pick in the first round because of concerns surrounding his speed.

Looking into the future of the NFC East

Jason Witten 300x220 Looking into the future of the NFC EastDallas Cowboys- The Cowboy roster on paper is always solid, however they fail to execute disappointing a huge fan following year after year. Big games remain a huge problem as they lost 4 out of the last 5 games down the stretch. Although Tony Romo, Jason Witten, and Dez Bryant played well, the running game needs someone in addition to Felix Jones. The defense looked lost at times, giving up big play after play and should begin to target some young defensive backs. Terence Newman enters his 10th year in the league and the secondary needs youth. DeMarcus Ware is still a beast and a pass rusher on the other side is needed. Interior offensive linemen are also a concern, and protecting Tony Romo remains one of Dallas’a main priorities.
New York Giants- An epic run that has given the franchise a new level of respect and Eli Manning is to thank, as a talented and deep roster should only get better and more experienced. The G-Men should be back to the playoffs next year, as Coughlin knows how to get his team to peak at the right time. The Giants will come into next year with loads of confidence and that is scary. With a nicely balanced offense and defense it wouldn’t surprise me if they won it all again.
Philadelphia Eagles: The buzz has already started, and experts are predicting Philadelphia to bounce back and cause a stir next year. With Michael Vick at QB the Eagles possess a weapon at QB that we have yet to see anywhere else. Offensively, the threat of LeSean McCoy, Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, resembles a three- headed snake that has been tamed before but could strike and could be surprisingly unpredictable. A slow start last fall began to spin out of control and once things came together it was too late. Next year, could be different and a decent draft pick will add depth. On both sides of the ball statistically the Eagles were above average and offensively were in impressive ranking 9th in passing and 5th in rushing overall. The defense flies under the radar and they lack big name stars. This upcoming draft they will most likely target interior defensive line to solidify a defense that was very solid.
Washington Redskins: Quarterback is an issue as Rex Grossman failed to solidify his role going into the future. The Redskins have several desperate needs, however WR should be at the forefront as Blackmon may be available. Running back is a problem while several backs carried the load and a sure fire game breaker has yet to emerge. Offensively, Jabar Gaffney and Fred Davis had great years, but a deep threat down the field could do wonders for team that ranked #26th in passing yardage. On defense the Skins need to concentrate on stopping the run. Linebacker London Fletcher and Brian Orakpo had outstanding campaigns in 2011, but the defensive line is a concern and needs help. The LB’s and DB’s stats became padded last year due to the lack of an upfront presence cause many tackles to be made down field.

2012 Mock Draft: NFC East edition

2012 NFL Draft 2012 Mock Draft: NFC East editionWelcome to the second Divisional Mock Draft where this week I will feature the NFC East, and the AFC North. It was an interesting season for the NFC East, as the Philadelphia Eagles were expected to be a Super Bowl contender but fell flat after their big spending spree. The Dallas Cowboys were once again plagued by not being able to play well when it mattered most, while the Washington Redskins were still the Redskins despite showing bright spots throughout the season. While the New York Giants finished the season 9-7 and went on to win their second Super Bowl in five seasons and Eli Manning became elite.

Eli Manning: No one better in final two minutes

Eli Manning 300x198 Eli Manning: No one better in final two minutesDuring his nine-year career, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has been under extreme scrutiny for almost all of it.

That’s what happens when you play in front of the New York media.

Although Manning has struggled, indeed, throughout his career, there is something certain about the Super Bowl XLII and XLVI most-valuable player: he knows how to win games.

From the smallest stage, to the largest, Manning has proven time and time again that when he is given the ball with two minutes remaining and the game on the line, he delivers.

For Giants’ fans, the confident strut that Manning takes under center in the final two minutes is something they have grown accustomed to, and it all started during that cold winter of 2007, which eventually ended in the University of Pheonix Stadium against the New England Patriots.

After leading New York to a thrilling overtime win over the Green Bay Packers in sub-zero weather in the NFC Championship game, Manning ran the game-winning drive against the undefeated Patriots.

New York trailed 14-10 with 2:42 remaining, and the seasoned quarterback — who until that point lived in the shadow of his older brother, Peyton, and his father, Archie — drove the Giants down the field for the 83-yard touchdown drive, that ultimately ended with a fade that landed in the hands of Plaxico Burress.

Coming into the 2011 season, many were skeptical of Manning’s ability to be a leader, with his most experienced receiver being Hakeem Nicks, who was drafted in 2009. Still, with a mix of different players, Manning has proved the ability, yet again, to win a game with a late drive, proving himself to be one of the best clutch quarterbacks in the NFL.

Victor Cruz steals the show at the Grammys (Video)

Victor Cruz Salsa 300x198 Victor Cruz steals the show at the Grammys (Video)

The NFL season may be over but the New York Giants’ Victor Cruz continues to shine.  On Sunday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Cruz and fellow teammate Mario Manningham found themselves amongst the biggest and brightest stars of the music industry at the annual Grammy Awards.

The two Giants receivers are usually catching passes from Eli Manning but tonight they were on stage to present the Best Rock Performance.

Prior to the award presentation Cruz was asked to salsa and of course he was only happy to strut his stuff.  Cruz performed briefly before being told to save it for the field by Manningham.

For Cruz, what an encore following his Super Bowl salsa after scoring the game’s first touchdown.  The Foo Fighters won the award by the way but Victor Cruz stole the show!

Is Tom Coughlin now THE best coach in Giants’ history?

Tom Coughlin Is Tom Coughlin now THE best coach in Giants’ history?Throughout his tenure in New York Tom Coughlin has had a love hate relationship with the fans, but now after leading the franchise to another Super Bowl victory could he be the best in Giants’ history? Coughlin became the Giants head coach in 2004, after a two-year hiatus following his seven seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and started to bring the old school mentality with him.

In 1988, Coughlin was hired by Bill Parcells as the team’s wide receiver’s coach and stayed until their Super Bowl victory in 1990. Little did Parcells know that Coughlin would evolve into someone who one day would be compared to him. Understandably so, Coughlin’s coaching style is a mirror imagine of Parcells’ which stresses strict discipline on and off the field.

Interestingly, his outlook on coaching is what got him the gig as the Giants’ coach. Before he was hired there were rumors about a lack of discipline and accountability stemming throughout the locker room. Coughlin proved to be the cure. Since his hiring, he has led the franchise to three division titles and two Super Bowl titles.

However, it was more than the hardware; he helped Eli Manning mature into the best quarterback in franchise history and weeded out the players that held the team back. Some of the gardening was easier than others. Former running back Tiki Barber left the team the off-season prior to their first Super Bowl victory under Coughlin due to the player openly questioning the coach’s ability to achieve the highest level of success. Oppositely, in 2008 wide receiver Plaxico Burress , a fan favorite due to his game winning touchdown catch at the end of Super Bowl XLII, accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub during the season and faced charges for illegally possessing a firearm. When the player was released before he was sentenced, there were grumblings that Coughlin was too strict and it could hinder his chances at winning another Super Bowl. Last weekend Coughlin proved those nay-sayers wrong… again.

Statistically, Coughlin matches up almost identically to Parcells. Both led their teams to three division titles and two Super Bowls. Furthermore, they both have more than seventy victories under their belt with the franchise with Parcells having a slightly better regular season win percentage. The most notable stat, though, is that they are both boasting an 8-3 record in the post-season.

The one thing that hurts Parcells in this debate is that he left the Giants and became quite the coaching nomad, while it seems like Coughlin is safe yet again in the Big Apple for at least a few more seasons. That coupled with the fact that Eli Manning is still maturing and becoming a more complete player makes it pretty cut and dry. Tom Coughlin, before it’s all said and done, will be the benchmark for future Giants’ coaches alone at the top.
