Tim Hightower looking to contribute to Redskins cause in 2012
Tim Hightower was the big high profile acquisition by the Washington Redskins in 2011 and the future was certainly looking bright at the running back posistion for the Burgandy and Gold. Hightower got off to a quick start in the preseason and would start in five of the six games that he played in but a torn ACL in a 33-20 loss at the Carolina Panthers put a premature end to his season. Roy Helu and Evan Royster would fill in superbly for Hightower with Helu showing that he was certainly a dual threat back. Hightower recently signed a one year deal with the Skins which means that he will have to contribute in 2012 and that most certainly should happen.
2012 NFC East predictions: Are the Cowboys playoff bound?
Can the Dallas Cowboys make the playoffs in 2012? Historically the NFC East has been one of the toughest divisions in the NFL and that tendency should again hold true in the upcoming season. Last season, the New York Giants won the NFC East with a 9-7 record on the last week of the regular season with a win over the Cowboys. With the offseason upgrades of the Washington Redskins and the way the Philadelphia Eagles ended 2011, any of the four teams are capable of becoming division champs in 2012. Here are the 2012 NFC East final standing predictions and team records.
Chris Hanburger: Past NFL great
If you were to ask someone who holds the record for the most Pro Bowl appearances by a Washington Redskin, the first players that would come to mind would be ones like Riggins, Monk, or Green. The answer to that question is middle linebacker Chris Hanburger with nine, #55 who patrolled the defensive backfield for the Redskins his entire career that spanned from 1965 to 1978. Hanburger was small in stature at 6 feet 2 inches and 225 pounds as compared to today’s linebackers but during his day was known as one of the smartest linebackers in the game and was always known for his knack to be on the ball. Hanburger was affectionately called ‘The Hangman’ for his penchant for clothesline tackling.
Redskins get RGIII and address needs in 2012 NFL Draft
The 2012 NFL Draft is over and the Washington Redskins were able to address the needs that they so desperately were seeking. The big story without a doubt was the selection of Robert Griffin III from Baylor with the second overall pick which sets the stage for the Redskins to have their franchise QB for years to come. Dan Snyder and Mike Shannahan though had other picks and other players to select and in the end they were able to come away with some solid talent.
Eagles draft QB Foles: Trade bait or Vick’s replacement?
With the 88th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Nick Foles, quarterback out of Arizona. For some this came as a surprise. Why would the Eagles take a QB in the third round? They already have Michael Vick and a capable backup in Mike Kafka? Was Foles taken as future trade bait or could the Eagles be eyeing him as the eventual replacement for Michael Vick?
2012 NFL Draft: Grading the first round
1. Indianapolis Colts – Andrew Luck – QB, Stanford
Buffalo is still trying to replace Jim Kelly, Miami is still trying to replace Dan Marino, Cleveland has needed a Quarterback forever, yet somehow the Colts get fortunate enough to go from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck without the down time that teams usually go through after losing a Hall of Fame Quarterback. Grade: A+
2. Washington Redskins – Robert Griffin III – QB, Baylor
The Redskins traded their second-round pick and three first-round picks (2012, 2013 and 2014) to move up four spots. Many may think that maybe too much but it’s not when your in a quarterback driven league. The Redskins will be a playoff contender thanks to this move and will surprise people this season because of it, the Quarterback carousel in Washington is over and now the challenge becomes, can Griffin survive the NFC East? Grade: A+
Cowboys move up, shock fans by selecting Morris Claiborne
The Dallas Cowboys knew exactly what they needed in the 2012 NFL Draft. An offense staring Tony Romo and Dez Bryant is great for putting up points but Rob Ryan’s defense was shredded last year, especially by the New York Giants.
The Cowboys are never afraid to take chances in the draft and by moving up to the sixth pick they made sure the player they were selecting was one of the best.
Morris Claiborne from LSU stated he wants to follow in the footsteps of fellow LSU CB Patrick Peterson and if he does there is no doubt he will be off to a stellar NFL career.
Claiborne is ranked as the top cornerback in the 2012 NFL draft .
2012 NFL draft: Can Robert Griffin revive Santana Moss?
The Washington Redskins have found their quarterback and it’s a huge upgrade from Rex Grossman and John Beck.
The Redskins were the only team in the NFC East to not have a solid starting quarterback, but by selecting Robert Griffin III from Baylor they found their franchise player.
As the comparisons between Cam Newton and RG3 begin the real question is who will he count on to catch the ball.
The Redskins brought in Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan but is it possible that RG3 could revive Santana Moss the same way Cam Newton revived Steve Smith?
RGIII versus Luck will go down in 2012
Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck are the new starting quarterbacks of the Washington Redskins and Indianapolis Colts. Don’t look now but they will be playing each other this season. Both ownerships and front offices of both teams have said that they will be intent with either one. The good thing about that ever so important decision of Jim Irsay and Dan Snyder is that either way, RGIII versus Luck will happen in 2012.
2012 NFL Draft: Looking toward the future with RGIII
One thing that looks for certain with the 2012 NFL Draft this coming Thursday is that Andrew Luck will go number one to the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins will use their number two pick to select the reigning Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor University in QB Robert Griffin III. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported at the end of last week that sources have said that the Colts will indeed select Luck with the first pick which opens up the door for the Skins to select RGIII.
2012 NFL draft: Cowboys and Ronnell Lewis could be a perfect fit
The Dallas Cowboys aren’t unwilling to take a chance on greatness just because of some difficulties off the field. They did a great job of showing that when they drafted Dez Bryant and now if they were to select LB, Ronnell Lewis from Oklahoma in the second round they may be taking another chance.
Ronnell Lewis was a fan favorite for the Oklahoma Sooners. Fans named him “The Hammer” after he rose to national prominence after two huge hits on special teams against the Stanford Cardinal in the 2009 Sun Bowl.
Lewis was named to the First team All-Big 12 and finished the season with 59 tackles which 13 of them were for a loss. He also posted 5.5 sacks, five pass breakups and an interception.
2012 NFL draft: Could Quinton Coples fall into the Eagles’ lap?
The Philadelphia Eagles and Andy Reid love to draft defense and while the line may not need to be addressed he loves to have talent and won’t be able to pass.
North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples may have benefited from defensive tackle Marvin Austin being suspended for the entire 2011 season, but it gave him the shot he needed to propel himself into the NFL.
Couples’ natural position is defensive end which he most likely will be moved back to when selected, but it does give a team the option of moving him around the line to confuse the offensive line.
