Todd Haley, Big Ben and the Steelers new look offense

Coach Todd Haley brings a trail of nothing but winning to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Haley was hired by the Steelers to replace Bruce Arians as the new Offensive Coordinator. When Haley was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs he turned their program around and put the Chiefs in a position to be a playoff contender. He also helped the Arizona Cardinals, as their Offensive Coordinator, to get the team to their first division title and also to the team’s first Super Bowl (XLIII). Todd Haley is also the son of a former NFL player Dick Haley who spent 44 years with NFL and he was the Steelers Director of Player Personnel from 1971-1991.

Steelers rookie Ikponmwosa Igbinosun: Player profile

The Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly ignored the defensive end position this offseason and in the NFL Draft. They did host future second round selection, defensive end Derek Wolfe (Denver Broncos) during the pre-draft visit portion of the process, but decided to pass on defensive ends with any of their nine selections. However, they did pick-up a couple of defensive ends as undrafted rookie free agents.

Ben Roethlisberger

As Roethlisberger goes so do the Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger is the starting quarterback of a team that is known for stellar, top notch defense. With names such as Jack Lambert, Joe Greene, Franco Harris, James Harrison, Troy Polamalu the Steelers legacy has always been on the defensive side of the ball.

Big Ben has changed this thinking because no one in the NFL, not named Peyton, is as crucial to his team’s success or failure as Roethlisberger is to the Steelers.

The Steelers’ quarterback finished the year throwing for 4,077 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

What a great 2012 NFL draft for the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers made some great picks in the NFL draft this year. They drafted to bolster a battered offensive line and also to have some back up on an aging defense. They made picks for the positions where they had the most need. From a need standpoint, the Steelers had a successful draft in 2012. They also stayed with their model of drafting only the players that they believe to fit into the model of how the Steelers conduct their day-to-day operations as a business and as a team.

David DeCastro

Steelers keeping fingers crossed for DeCastro?

The popular pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers at number twenty-four has been Don’t’a Hightower, linebacker out of the University of Alabama, but with all the shuffling that is expected to occur in the middle of the first round they may be hoping for David DeCastro, offensive guard out of Stanford, to fall into their lap.

2012 NFL draft: Pittsburgh Steelers projected picks

When draft day comes around the Pittsburgh Steelers have always flown under the radar compared to most teams. They have never been a team that drafted the big name players. They only draft players that fit into the Steelers mold and the Steelers way of doing things. They stick to the formula that has won them six Lombardi trophies. I don’t think this year will be any different. Pittsburgh has the 24th pick in the first round if nothing changes in the hours leading up to the draft on Thursday night.

Whitney Mercilus

Steelers could get the steal of the draft by selecting Mercilus

The history of the Pittsburgh Steelers draft suggests they usually take the highest rated player still on their board and if that trend continues their selection should be DE/OLB Whitney Mercilus from Illinois.

After cutting James Farrior, Whitney Mercilus could be instantly plugged in next to Lawrence Timmons.

Someone has to put an end to an offensive explosion in the NFL and if defensive end Whitney Mercilus had his say he would be the one.

Pittsburgh Steelers Throwback Uniforms

Just when you thought the Steelers throwbacks couldn’t get any worse, they did.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known for their tough brand of football, which is supported by their very masculine uniforms of solid black with accents of gold and white. However, over the past half-decade they have been trying to adhere to the current trend of bringing back past uniforms but it has only led them to yellow helmets and now bumble bee type striped jerseys.

Currently, teams throughout the NFL are changing uniforms every few years for numerous reasons ranging from excitement with fans or to symbolize a change in the outlook of the organization. On the other hand, there are teams that have hit home runs with their uniforms and they seem to last the test of time. The Steelers fallen into the latter category since the 1970’s.

Mike Wallace

The Steelers and Free Agent signings

In my estimation, the Pittsburgh Steelers organization handles dealing with their free agents differently than most other teams in the NFL. They actually conduct all of their day-to-day business in a different manner. When they draft players out of college and when they pick up free agents, they only pick up players that fit the Steelers family mold. They do not chase the big marquee name players, or follow the lead of other organizations in the NFL. They have a formula for success that has led them to the Super Bowl on eight occasions and winning the Lombardi trophy six times, which is more than any other club.

3 NFL teams guarenteed to miss the 2012 playoffs

Norv Turner 300x214 3 NFL teams guarenteed to miss the 2012 playoffsThe ‘win now’ philosophy is not at all new, and with teams like the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions seemingly getting things together, there has to be room made towards the top of the list of championship contenders. There may be a changing of the guard as soon as the upcoming season. While the championship hopes of some teams are just beginning to bloom, there are a few windows that are most certainly closing.

Ben Roethlisberger

Ben Roethlisberger, the toughest quarterback in the NFL?

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is nicknamed “Big” because he is a load at 6’5 and 241 pounds. When it comes to the quarterback position, one does not really think of the word tough anymore due to the NFL changing the rules to protect the quarterback from being hurt. The quarterback being the marquee position on the field, it is imperative that they be protected. Big Ben is not the quarterback who will take a knee or slide to avoid being hit. He is old school, in the style of Johnny Unitas who would run over or through you to get that first down or that touchdown.  He was fearless taking the snap from under center. Big Ben seems to be cut from the same cloth. He will fight and struggle to get extra yardage. He will stand in the pocket knowing that he is going to get hit in the mouth by opposing defenses. He is big and powerful and not afraid to run the ball if it comes to that. He will put his head down and plow forward.

Mike Wallace

Mike Wallace: The receiver the Pittsburgh Steelers can’t lose

The speedy third-year receiver out of Mississippi, Mike Wallace, has made himself a very valuable asset to the Pittsburgh Steelers offense.

He presents a down-field threat each and every time that he steps onto the field. Just his on-field presence causes opposing defenses change the way in which they try to defend him. Defending him is not an easy task. He has enough speed to just flat out run past most defenders.
