Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow isn’t the fastest QB in the AFC East but who is?

Often in the NFL a huge emphasis is placed on the 40 time of players.  New York Jets quarterback Tim is one of the more mobile quarterbacks in the NFL yet his 40 time isn’t overly impressive.  A fullback playing quarterback, Tebow does possess deceptive speed with the uncanny ability to beat defenders to the edge.  Despite Tebow’s athletic prowess, believe it or not, he isn’t the fastest quarterback in the AFC East.  So who is?

6.   Tom Brady, New England Patriots:  Brady is doing his best to prove that less can be more when it comes to the speed of an NFL quarterback.  At his NFL combine, Brady ran an unimpressive 5.28, 40-yard dash.  Many scouts and teams may have snickered but Brady and the Patriots are definitely getting the last laugh.  Brady’s career record is 124-35 and he’s played in five Super Bowls.  Not bad for a slow poke.

Junior Seau

Junior Seau, goodbye “Buddy”

Today the world found out the tragic news that the beloved and respected man known as Junior Seau was found dead at the age of 43.

Uncharacteristic for a linebacker in the NFL, it seems like everyone enjoyed Seau and the way he played. Not only his teammates and opponents, but the fans also seemed to migrate towards him. Teammates in Miami, New England, and San Diego all remember him as a great player, leader, and friend.

Most importantly, he was a ground breaker for young men of Polynesian decent. He came from a home where he and his siblings literally slept on the floor of a one car garage, to becoming one of the most talented athletes to ever come out of the San Diego area. Seau’s accomplishments at Oceanside High School, California, in football, basketball, and track earned him a scholarship to play football for the prestigious University of Southern California. After a rough start to his career at USC due to academic inadequacies, he went on to don the number 55 jersey for the Trojans (a jersey that is worn by a player considered to be a future NFL star) and become a first round draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1990. Since his time at USC, there have been many great players of Polynesian descent to leave their mark at the university in the wake of Seau’s greatness. Names like Troy Polamalu, Rey Maualuga, and Lofa Tatupu to name a few have all gone on to vault the program to greatness en route to promising NFL careers.

Ryan Tannehill

Miami Dolphins select Ryan Tannehill, the punter

Everyone knew it was coming as the Miami Dolphins selected Ryan Tennehill with the eighth overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The next question becomes now what because Tannehill isn’t ready to start in the NFL.

Maybe while Tannehill sits behind current starter Matt Moore he can handling the punting duties since he has done that before.

In fact, Tannehill was a punter, wide receiver and also a quarterback. Just the type of guy you want to make your franchise player.

Was it worth it for the Dolphins to reach this far when Matt Moore will still be the starter in Week 1?

Matt Moore

2012 NFL Draft: Why Miami should build around Matt Moore

When Matt Moore took over the Miami Dolphins last season, nobody expected him to play well but he played well enough to take the Dolphins to a 6-10 record and the eighth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Many draft experts expect to see Ryan Tannehill hold up the Dolphins jersey on Thursday night as the newest member of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have been looking for a Franchise quarterback for quite sometime and many believe Tannehill could solve the quarterback issue. The draft isn’t an exact science so while you may find the right formula that works, in other cases it may blow up in your face if he turns into a bust. Tannehill may turn into the next Dan Marino or Tom Brady, nobody knows anything but this, there is a ton of risk in drafting a quarterback in the first round.

Alex Smith

Will the Dolphins settle for Alex Smith at quarterback?

It’s been an interesting week watching the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation deteriorate with each free agent QB signing.  At one point the Dolphins were favored to sign Matt Flynn.  Then with his release from the Indianapolis Colts, the Fins were thought to be on Peyton Manning’s shortlist of possible teams he would sign with.  With the news that Manning is not interested in going to Miami and Matt Flynn’s signing with the Seattle Seahawks the Dolphins are now taking a look at Alex Smith.

Matt Flynn

Browns and Dolphins making offer for Matt Flynn

The Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins are negotiating with Packers backup Matt Flynn and are expected to exchange contract offers with his agent soon according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Brandon Marshall to Chicago: How this makes sense for Miami

As Brandon Marshall packs his bags to make a new home in Chicago it leaves many of us scratching our heads regarding the decision making of the Miami Dolphins.

Receiving two third round draft picks for a pro-bowl wide receiver doesn’t seem like it was worth it for Miami, but further investigation shows that it could be.

2012 NFL draft: Possible selections for the Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins 300x203 2012 NFL draft: Possible selections for the Miami DolphinsThe 2011 Miami Dolphins started off losing their first seven games of the season, but showed promise winning six out of their last nine games.

Despite holding opponents to a AFC East low 330 points the Dolphins failed to improve on their record from 2010 which resulted in the dismissal of head coach Tony Sparano.

The 2012 NFL draft could be an interesting mark in time for the organization as the emergence of Matt Moore may have altered the original plan of looking for a quarterback.

The Dolphins new head coach is Joe Philbin who was previously the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers since 2007 and originally joined the team as the assistant offensive line coach in 2003.

Michael Brockers 150x150 2012 NFL draft: Possible selections for the Miami Dolphins

Michael Brockers

This marks the 10th head coach in team history as Stephen Ross was searching for a “young Don Shula.”

More importantly the Dolphins owner is looking for stability and that could also mean at the quarterback position.

The Penalty Flag’s Mike Presley has the Dolphins selecting the following two players in the first rounds;

Round 1, Pick 9: Michael Brockers DT LSU: The Dolphins are surprisingly moving to a 4-3 defense and will need players to fit that scheme. Jared Odrick can play one of the Defensive Tackle positions but they need someone else to play the other. Brockers is climbing up draft boards and may be a top 15 pick come April, so reaching for a great player here at 9 won’t be much for the Dolphins.

Round 2, Pick 42: Zebrie Sanders OT FSU: Marc Colombo can and should be upgraded, whether in Free Agency or in the draft. You know how bad he is, he gave up three of the nine sacks that the Eagles had in their game last season. Sanders, or well anyone can be an upgrade over Colombo and they should be focused on protecting Matt Flynn or whoever the Quarterback will be.

Mel Kiper of ESPN.com thinks the Dolphins will take Riley Reiff, OT Iowa State;

“The Dolphins made big improvements to the offensive line last year with their first-round pick, and Reiff would offer them an immediate starter and make the offensive line a big strength. Reiff’s tape was exceptional this past season, and he has a lot of experience and a proven ability against top competition. The Dolphins were very close to being a good team in 2011, and I do think they can target a player on offense, although help at outside linebacker also makes sense. The Dolphins could be another team looking for options at quarterback, but even if they go into the season with Matt Moore back as starter, Reiff adds further stability to an offense that could continue to improve.”

Can Reggie Bush continue the success in Miami?

dolphins 300x212 Can Reggie Bush continue the success in Miami? The 2011 campaign was a stellar one for Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush, but can he keep it up?

After five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Bush joined the Dolphins by way of trade that netted the Saints a swap of sixth round picks and Jonathan Amaya. It turns out, the Dolphins were the winners in that trade after Bush broke-out for the best rushing season of his career.

In his five seasons with the Saints, the most rushing yards Bush compiled in a single season was 581 on 157 carries.

This past season with the Dolphins, Bush carried the ball 216 times for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns. That’s an average of five yards per carry for the former second overall pick out of the University of Southern California. He added 43 receptions for 296 yards. The question now is whether or not Bush can repeat the performance and be called a feature back in the NFL on a consistent basis.

At this point, it’s difficult to guess as to what Bush will do for the team in 2012 as the Dolphins have a new head coach in former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin’s Packers’ offense finished 27th in the league in rushing yards with just 97.4 yards per game, which is significantly less than the Dolphins’ 124.2 rushing yards per game last season.

The new offensive coordinator for the Dolphins, however, is former Packers and Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Sherman. Sherman’s Aggies rushed for 199.2 yards per game last year, good enough for 23rd in the nation for college football.

Philbin also retained running backs coach Jeff Nixon, who was instrumental in Bush’s success throughout the season.

A new offense, new schemes and some coaches that know how to distribute the ball bodes well for Bush, but it will be on him to deliver the way he did this past season. If he continues to play at the same level, Bush will most likely receive a nice contract extension and earn himself the title of an every down running back in the NFL; something that many people doubted of him.

Can Reggie Bush continue the success in Miami?

Pennington thinks he’d be less of a physical risk than Manning

Chad Pennington 300x200 Pennington thinks hed be less of a physical risk than ManningAt 35 years-old Chad Pennington of the Miami Dolphins has undergone four surgeries on his throwing shoulder and has been basically off the field for almost all of the last two seasons, but that didn’t stop him from sharing his opinion on the Dolphins pursing Peyton Manning.

Pennington thinks the Dolphins might be taking a bigger risk pursuing Manning than they would in re-signing him.

“Because it’s a neck,” Pennington said. “But that’s where you consult your doctors.”

Pennington, who switched from playing to broadcasting last season after a torn ACL in a pickup basketball game sidelined him for the season, has been working with NFL Draft prospects at the TEST Football Academy on the Florida Atlantic University campus.

Pennington could have used Nopalea (No-pah lay’uh). A tasty wellness drink sourced from the fruit of the Nopal cactus (Opuntia Ficus Indica). The healing properties of the Nopal cactus have been relied on for centuries by native peoples, and they’re now available in Nopalea. Each 32–ounce bottle of Nopalea brims with the health benefits of the Nopal fruit.

Nopalea helps your body neutralize its inner toxins and reduce its inflammation. Over 3 million bottles have been sold and it could have helped him prolong his career.

He said pursuing Green Bay backup Matt Flynn in free agency could be the best answer for the Dolphins because it would set up a competition for the starting job between Flynn and Moore.

“Now you’ve got two guys who have proven they can do it, and with them pushing each other you may get one to take the lead role,” Pennington said. “That’s not a bad situation.”

You can try Nopalea for free (only pay $9.95 for shipping) by calling 1-800-203-7063. Over 3 million bottles sold!

2012 Mock Draft: AFC East edition

2012 NFL Draft 2012 Mock Draft: AFC East editionThe 2011 NFL Season is officially over, and the 2012 NFL Season is under way. With Free Agency and the Draft coming up in the next couple months, it is going to be a very busy time for all teams as they look to keep their free agents, or sign away another player from another team. Now let’s skip Free Agency and head right into the Draft. The scouting combine is just weeks away and players will be doing their best to raise their stock and show teams they are worthy of being selected in the Draft.

So with that said, I’m going to do a Mock Draft for every team, by division. Once I get through all the divisions, I will reveal my first 32 team first round mock. For now, take a look at who I have the teams in the AFC East taking, and plenty will change between this and the 32 team mock. Stay tuned for the NFC East mock draft next week.

Miami Dolphins:

Round 1, Pick 8*: Michael Brockers DT LSU: The Dolphins are surprisingly moving to a 4-3 defense and will need players to fit that scheme. Jared Odrick can play one of the Defensive Tackle positions but they need someone else to play the other. Brockers is climbing up draft boards and may be a top 15 pick come April, so reaching for a great player here at 8 won’t be much for the Dolphins.

* = Pick Based on Coin Flip with Carolina Panthers

Buffalo Bills:

Round 1, Pick 10: Quinton Coples DE, UNC: The Bills are moving to the 4-3 and they need pass rushers. Coples could experience a draft night fall in April but some team will take him in the Top 10 and that will be the Bills. With Marcel Dareus and Kyle Williams manning the middle, they will need edge rushers and Coples can be good as long as he puts fourth the effort, which was a big issue.

Round 2, Pick 41: Zach Brown OLB, UNC: The Bills need as many 4-3 players as possible to help make their transition smooth. They continue to improve their front seven, and Brown is a steal here at 41 and the Bills defense continues to get better.

New York Jets:

Round 1, Pick 16: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama: The Jets pass rush needs to be upgraded. If the Jets want to ever stop playing second fiddle to the Patriots, then maybe getting to Tom Brady will help. Upshaw had an absolute wonderful season and was named MVP of the National Title game and will provide Rex Ryan his New York version of Terrell Suggs.

Round 2, Pick 47: Nick Toon WR Wisconsin: The Jets are imploding right now, if it wasn’t for Santonio Holmes’ contract, they would probably dump him so why not draft another receiver in the meantime.

New England Patriots:

Round 1, Pick 27(via NO): Vinny Curry DE/OLB Marshall: Patriots defense was horrible last season, at least until they got some players back who were injured. The way the defense played when they got healthy shows what kind of defense they truly have. The Patriots improve their pass rush with Curry and add more youth to their defense.

Round 1, Pick 31: Lamar Miller RB Miami: Make no mistake about it, one of these first round picks will be traded. Right now I don’t project trades even though my 32 team Mock will feature trades. Miller is too good to pass up here at 31, and gives them another weapon on offense to work with.

Round 2, Pick 48: Harrison Smith SS Notre Dame: Patriots once again go defense. Things didn’t work out with Meriweather so they will need another safety. When Mike Mayock praises a player, it’s always a bonus. Smith has nice size(6’2) and has played great for Notre Dame the past two seasons which warrants him as a second round pick.

Round 2, Pick 63: Jared Crick DE Nebraska: 4 picks within the first two rounds, did the Patriots win a lottery or what. They should be able to improve their team with the early picks they got and again they go defense as Crick adds more talent to what was a weak defense for the most of 2011.

5 NFL owners who shouldn’t own teams

Jim Irsay 5 NFL owners who shouldnt own teamsThanks to Jim Irsay, this article has been spawned and written. I wrote earlier about how his tweeting could cost him Andrew Luck, now I’m saying that he shouldn’t be owning a NFL team. No other owner is on Twitter and tweeting every day and tweeting non-sense. Now he doesn’t tweet all non-sense, I mean he has given out Super Bowl tickets through contests on his Twitter. Despite that, he needs to stop tweeting as it’s not say, the norm for a business executive who is running one of the prestigious 32 NFL teams. Does that mean the 31 other owners are doing better than Irsay just because they don’t tweet? Not exactly, as there are owners out there who all have their flaws, specifically these five owners. They made this list due to the fact that they mishandle their team, don’t do what’s right for the team, who are cheap and shouldn’t be owning any teams in the NFL.

The Glazer Family: The Glazers own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and have done so since 1995 when Malcolm Glazer purchased the team for $192 Million. Now Tampa does have one Super Bowl, but Malcolm and the entire Glazer family have shown that not only are they cheap but are more concerned about the Manchester United soccer team that he purchased for $1.47 Billion between 2003 and 2005. That is where the trouble started, after buying the Manchester United, they would begin to spend less on players, and it has even rolled over to the coaching staff. Raheem Morris was a cheap hire, and so was new Head Coach Greg Schiano. Until the Glazers sell the team, the Buccaneers will continue to be ignored and be the red headed step child to the Manchester United, the Glazer’s obviously top priority.

Dan Snyder: Our Fantasy Football fanatic of the Washington Redskins makes this list. Dan Snyder purchased the team in 1999 for a whopping $800 Million, which at the time was the biggest transaction in sports history. Not only do we know that he has money, but he loves to spend it and during Free Agency. Snyder has been playing fantasy Football with the Redskins since he has been the owner. Since he has taken over the Redskins are 91-117, they have gone through seven head coaches in just thirteen seasons, and even demanded a removal of sports writer Dave McKenna for just expressing his opinion, and most importantly how can he screw up the Ricky Williams trade and not find players with all those draft picks. There are so many other things I can name but I will stop before he demands me to be removed from the Penalty Flag.

Jim Irsay: Our Tweet obsessive owner who should be more worried about how to handle Peyton Manning and his bonus than tweeting. Irsay right now is doing way too much tweeting and is not being who he should be, a NFL Owner. Owners of any sports team should act mature, and like a business person should, and Irsay is certainly not doing any of that. Right now he is doing his best impression of a NFL Owner, but is not acting like a Owner.

Stephen Ross: This is an owner who is more obsessed with celebrities, the spotlight and well being all about money. When you can say that Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams owned apart of the team, something is clearly wrong. Ross sold pieces of the Dolphins to these celebrities, and why? There is no point of and when your just handing out ownership like it’s cake, you have to be skeptical of how he runs things. Also who can forget how he was recruiting Jim Harbaugh while Tony Sparano was still under contract. Don’t get too comfy in Miami Joe Philbin, Ross may be recruiting your next replacement behind your back already.

Mike Brown: He wasn’t the only person in the state of Ohio who threatened to move a team out of the state, and because of that and many other screw ups Mike Brown is not a fan favorite among Cincinnati Bengals fans. Since his father’s death in 1991, Mike has been in control of the team and just like when Dan Snyder purchased the team, the on the field product suffered. The Bengals have only had 3 winning seasons, out of 21 seasons and are 0-3 in the playoffs since Brown took over. Another reason why fans don’t like him, he is too loyal and keeps coaches when it is obvious a coaching change is needed. He has kept Marvin Lewis despite the fact the Bengals have had not much success, even though they did make the playoffs this past season, until Brown gives up the team, the Bengals will never live up to their true potential.
