What should the Seahawks do with Matt Flynn?

What should the Seahawks do with Matt Flynn?

Matt Flynn was supposed the be the future for the Seattle Seahawks. He was brought in to be the franchise QB, that would lead Seattle into the playoffs. He was going to be the final piece that Seattle needed to be a real league threat.  He signed a three year 19.5 million dollar contract. Everything was in place. Then Seattle drafted Russell Wilson and the rest is history. Flynn was benched, and he stayed there all season. Flynn has proven though, that he can play football at a pro level, and that he can put up numbers. So the question is, should the Seahawks release him, trade him, or keep him?

Flynn is getting 6.5 million dollars a year. That is so big money for a backup. If the Seahawks released him, it would clear up so cap room. But other than a little more cap space, releasing Flynn would be a terrible idea. Starting NFL QBs get hurt often, especially ones who run as much as Wilson does.  And it’s always good to have a backup that you can trust. Flynn can come into any game, and help the Seahawks win it. So releasing Flynn is not the way Seattle should go.

There are quite a few options for the Seahawks if they want to trade Flynn. Because this years draft does not have any big name QBs coming out of it, many teams might be willing to give Seattle their high draft pick for Flynn. The Seahawks could then take that high draft pick and get a big defensive linemen to help with the Clemons injury. They may also be able to trade him to a team that has a good receiver, but no quaterback to throw him the ball.

Seattle is taking no risk by keeping Flynn. If they choose to keep him, they will have a strong backup for if Wilson gets hurt. And as more teams becoming in need of a starting QB, the more the Seahawks can demand for Matt Flynn.

  1. You have a quarterback (Flynn) who understands the offence, you have a team, if everything fits right to possibly go all the way. Keep him another year, draft another prospect or not, but now is not the time to try to teach a new kid a new offence if you trade him.
