Potential 2013 Arizona Cardinals roster changes
The 2012 season is over for the Arizona Cardinals, and now we look onto the potential 2013 Arizona Cardinals roster changes. The Cards will potentially let 19 players fly away in 2013. Well, there is good news and bad news for Cardinals fans. The good news is the Cardinals will not lose that many significant players other than maybe Paris Lenon to free agency. However the bad news is the Cards will definitely lose players, because of the salary cap situation. The Cards will be about two million over the projected maximum salary cap for 2013, and that means this team is cooked.
Most of the problems start with Kevin Kolb, because his salary cap hit for 2013 is about 15 million. That might lead to Kolb being released, but the Cards don’t have any other options at the QB spot. It’s simply a bad situation, because it’s rebuilding all over again on the Cardinals offense mostly. The receivers are there, but the offensive line, running backs, tight ends and of course the quarterbacks are not exceptional. The players you might see released this offseason are wide receiver Early Doucet, and safety Kerry Rhodes.
I don’t like Doucet and I like Kerry Rhodes. That will be the same thought process with the Cardinals. The Cards will save more than 1.5 million by releasing Doucet, and 4.5 million for releasing Rhodes. That will get the Cardinals under the cap with 4 million to spare, but as you can already tell. More players are likely to be put on the block or on the street, because 4 million is not enough money to do much of anything to improve the Cards this offseason.
That’s no even enough money to pay for all the new draft picks coming this season. More changes will come, but hopefully the Cards will focus on quality over quantity with their releases. Bottom-line, the Cardinals need a quarterback desperately. Where that quarterback will come from is anyone’s guess. However this franchise won’t win without one. Bruce Arians will need to work a little of his magic from his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, on the Arizona Cardinals in 2013.
