Dolphins should re sign Reggie Bush sooner rather than later
The Miami Dolphins have many decisions to make over the offseason after coming from a surprisingly successful season, but the Dolphins need to re sign Reggie Bush. The main reason is uncertainty at the running back position. Daniel Thomas at this point has become a wasted 2nd round pick barely averaging 3.9 yards per carry and Lamar Miller hasn’t had enough film to distinguish if he could be the teams featured back. It would be a gamble to let Bush go and Bush has been a steady back to ride the ship. All of the foreshadowing by analysts that Bush would catch the injury bug has proven to be inaccurate as Bush has only missed 1 game in his 2 years on the team so far.
Not to mention that Bush has been posting decent numbers out of the backfield for a feature back. Bush finished 2011 with a career best 1,086 yards and averaged 5 yards per carry on 216 attempts. Bush’s numbers are not as good as they could be, because the Dolphins don’t utilize him as much as other running backs, but if he wasn’t in a committee. Bush would post numbers making him one of the best running backs in the NFL. You also have to factor in age with Bush as well.
Bush is only 27 years old going on 28 in the offseason. 28 is a little old for a running back, I’ll give you that, but in Bush’s case. He hasn’t had the type of wear and tear most backs have when they start to break down in their late 20’s to early 30’s. He’s a running back that only averaged about 105 attempts a season before he came to the Dolphins. In the scheme of most featured backs making 250-300 attempts a season, Bush is a lightweight. There also is the possibility that Bush was acquiring injuries all the time, because he was in a three back committee on the Saints.
When you don’t get all the carries as a running back, that is less time to practice, less time to train and less time to get into football shape. More research needs to be done to prove that theory, but what is known is Bush has had no harmful injury issues to speak of. His age is not suspect and he is still explosive if he you put on the game tape. He’s no longer dating Kim Kardashian and has been by most inside reports to be a great leader in the locker room. The Dolphins have their Franchise quarterback for the future, but the Dolphins need to resign Reggie Bush to 2-3 years is the best decision the Dolphins can make and is well worth the price tag to boot.
