5 teams that should turn to Packers’ Matt Flynn in 2012

Matt Flynn

Matt Flynn made himself a ton of money with a standout performance including a Green Bay Packers’ record 6 touchdown and 480 yards passing.  Flynn was drafted in the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft and is now a free agent moving into 2012. Unlikely to stay with the Packers, as no one will be replacing Aaron Rodgers anytime soon, here are five teams that should turn to Flynn to find success in 2012.

1. New York Jets

Rex Ryan may have backed starting quarterback Mark Sanchez before losing to the Miami Dolphins, but now the season has come to an end and it’s likely the Jets could be searching for a new starting quarterback. What Sanchez lacks, Flynn has. In the two games he started he moved the Packers offense up and down the field against the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions. Sanchez has struggled moving the Jets anywhere. After the game and after losing three straight to finish 8-8 and fall short from Ryan’s Super Bowl pledge, news has surfaced the Jets will revamp the offensive coaching staff. The first thing a new coach will say? If you plan on getting to the Super Bowl you need a quarterback who can move you down the field.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

No one knows who will be the coach of the Bucs in 2012, but odds are Josh Freeman will still be the starting quarterback. If that is a good thing is out for questioning. The Tampa Bay Times says it best, In the marriage between the Bucs franchise and Freeman, this has been one of those “or worse” seasons. By any measure, he has had an alarmingly dreadful season. His regression has been historic. His interceptions have more than tripled (from 6 to 19). His touchdown passes have fallen by 11 (from 25 to 14). He has lost 21 points off of his QB ratings.

While Tampa questions Josh Freeman and if he will bounce back in 2012, Matt Flynn could give the Bucs a backup who could step in and replace him if needed. He obviously had no problem replacing Aaron Rodgers.

3. Denver Broncos

Can we be honest? How long is this Tim Tebow phenomenon actually going to last? Eventually things could get ugly for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos once everyone catches on to the option run. While Tebow may never be irrelevant as long as he is on the Broncos, Flynn could be the long-term quarterback John Elway has been searching for. He is battle tested bringing back the Packers in the 4th quarter in the snow and even led his LSU Tigers to a National Championship.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars need a lot and starting to build under a quarterback that can throw the ball would be a strong start. Flynn may lack the ideal tools, but plenty of quarterbacks have done more with less. Flynn has been taught by and learned from the best in Green Bay and will be ready to see if his career holds more than a clipboard. He has to better than Blaine Gabbert who was held to 92 yards against a 2-14 Indianapolis Colts team?

5. Dallas Cowboys

Dallas fans, you really want to make a move? Well here is your chance! Had enough of Tony Romo and the “Romocoaster” each week?  Matt Flynn to Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Laurent Robinson has quite the ring to it. Each time the Cowboys lose everyone seems to want the head of Tony Romo but who else is there? Jon Kitna?

Signing a quarterback like Flynn could spark Romo to his best season in 2012 and if it doesn’t go as planned at least you have someone who can step in and give the Cowboys a chance.

+1. Miami Dolphins

Now that former offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has been announced as the head coach the Dolphins become the favorite to land the services of Matt Flynn, but that also sparks the debate if they need him. Matt Moore had a solid year and may have altered the fate of the Dolphins draft and free agency. If there is anyone who knows what Flynn can do, it’s Philbin, and now we have to wait and see.

Cowboys, Seahawks, Chiefs, and Browns should make an attempt. Seahawks or Chiefs would be the best destinations, though, because the Cowboys don’t need an impulse purchase and the Browns are just a very bad situation. Seahawks have a great running game and talented receivers like Sidney Rice and Zach Miller. Similarly, KC has Jamaal Charles and one of the deepest WR corps in the league with Breaston, Baldwin, and Bowe.

      Reply to Steve Gross–
I agree with you. After watching Tarvaris Jackson as the QB all year, he definitely isn’t the one the Seahawks need to lead the team. Matt Flynn would be a great addition. Whether Pete Carroll and the higher-ups plan to pursue him is another story

        Matt Flynn for Marshawn Lynch

Why? Flynn is a Unrestricted Free Agent. Nice try though

    • Chet Tucholski

      Seahawks for an obvious reason.

Great article but I see something different in Flynn. I see the next Kevin Kolb. Here is a guy who is benefiting from a terrfic system with tremendous talent and he hasn’t played a full season. Teams will definitely buy into the hype but I would be cautious. Put him on this year’s Broncos or Jags team and I think he would stink. It will be interesting to watch this saga unfold…

I dunno, I don’t think Kevin Kolb ever showed the accuracy that he has over two games. I know it’s only two games, but you also have to remember who he has been sitting behind and what he has learned in that system. Not to mention he has a National Championship with LSU.

Agree with you. 7th round pick, is the guy the next Tom Brady or the next Matt Cassell?

  • Derron Tapp

I hear what you all are saying but have you forgotten the Washington redskins???? They probably need a quarterback worst than the colts

    • http://facebook.com/SportsByG GB Bongiovanni

Very true, I was assuming they pick one up in the draft with the Colts.

  • Chet Tucholski

    Seattle for an obvious reason.

  • Dolly McFin

Miami should be pursuing him if they dont mortgage the house to move up for RG3.

    …..Just Sayin……

  • Zerothe

Come on man !!! He will be in the same conversation as Kolb and Matt Castle fries only come in one size >_<

      Don’t forget Rob Johnson

All of your picks for the teams who need help behind center are dead on, GB. To the ones you’ve already mentioned I’d be inclined to add the Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders. Rex Grossman gets rattled even more easily than Daunte Culpepper did and Carson Palmer gives me the feeling that he’ll never again be what he once was. Or perhaps he will if he had someone competent pushing him (like Matt Flynn?)

The Raiders gave up a lot for Palmer. He is there for the long haul. I do agree, he will never be what he once was

  • Rob

Matt will not go anyplace to be a backup QB, end of story. He has all the tools that so many teams need as starter and if you ever seen him work as we have going to practices you would see that. He just needs a ride and he will be a top ten QB out of the box. QB’s are made in Title Town!!

  • Marrell

This is a really stupid list. You advocate teams like Tampa Bay and Dallas sign him as a backup, even though he will cost a fortune and will not leave Green Bay unless guaranteed a starting job. Surely you can do better than this.

  • Rob

Here is a curveball team that I truly believe could use him. How about my beloved San Francisco 49ers. Alex Smith is looking way to much like Trent Dilfer the year that Baltimore won it all! I think that there are way to many weapons on that team for such a Vanilla offense. Flynn is quicker and has a better arm. I think it would be a good fit!!

If the Niners want to win next year. Sign Peyton and either Colston or Wayne as free agent receivers

LMAO what? romocoaster please romo was the best thing of the Cowboys along with murray. Romo had nothing to do with the season, the db’s who cant cover sh*t and the young o-line is the problem romo had less int. than brees, & eli manning. Also had more TD than eli and vick

    • cowboy fan 1

f that roma needs someone to push him but if you fire garrett butt things would be better much better get the old pittburge caoch.

  • http://facebook.com/TheSportologist Lamont Broadus (TheSportologist)

The Redskins will get RGIII I definately see the Browns trading down to get more draft picks. We are not desperate like some of these other teams to get a QB we need some more offense… which I think we will address by getting a RB, WR and some more O linemen.

  • sam

all i have to say is ….cardinals

  • willie

This is the Kevin Kolb effect. The guy had ONE good game on national television, and now the over-reactions begin. Is Flynn really that good? Or is he a back-up who was in the zone on a given Sunday? I wouldn’t want to pay tens of millions to find out he’s not.

  • Otis R. Needleman

DEFINITELY the Jets. Not just Sanchez, but the team in general regressed this past year. Flynn could be a big help, I believe.

  • Keith

The cowboys, Bucs, Broncos he will not go to since he wouldnt start. So You should have made the list 1) Jets 2) Redskins 3) Browns 4) Seahawks 5) Jags I just dont see them dumping that 1st round pick after 1 year and no other weapons other than a RB.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_47TG473ZABTKL4EKB7X7NA7FOE Stephen Monachello

I guess teams have not learned from Kevin Kolb and Rob Johnson. I see this guy in either Washington or with the Jets and their fans screaming after 3 weeks of struggling.
